Marriage Counseling
Posted by Mena Chaudhry in Life and Relationships on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 | 1 responses

At times, even the happiest of couples face obstacles, which create a barrier in communication. Issues, ranging from small misunderstandings to serious crisis, can threaten the strongest of relationships.
"Is marriage counseling a good idea? Should one turn to family/friends instead?"
However, if you are invested in each other and genuinely looking to grow from the experience, then there a variety of actions you can take. Of course, this is not to suggest that if it is a dangerous situation, including any type of abuse, then one should try to make it work. Rather, there are various sources of action that can be taken by those who are looking to better understand and work things out with their partner.

Usually, problems arise because of a lack of communication on the part of one, or both, of the individuals. This can stem from a variety of reasons; however, whatever the cause might be the result is typically the same– mistrust, anger, sadness, and resentment. These emotions build over time until one, or both, of the individuals can no longer tolerate the other. The downward spiral continues until the relationship ends. Conversely, if the individuals want to make it work, then there is a range of tools that can be useful for mending broken bridges.

One such method is couples/marriage counseling. There are professional relationship counselors who provide couples therapy. In addition, many religious organizations/churches/mosques/temples offer marriage counseling to the members of their congregations. Often, such counseling is available before a couple gets married, as well as later for those who are having problems during their marriage. Whichever route you choose, be sure to set a goal and check the authenticity of the counselor before beginning. For, you will be expected to trust a third party with personal information.
