"Where would you like to go for your honeymoon?"
What exactly is a honeymoon? After some exhaustive research, well okay I just “googled” the term. I was surprised to discover a myriad of folklore referring to the origins of the term “honeymoon”. Everything from Norse legend to modern day usage of the term come to this one point– For a lack of a better description, a honeymoon is a time when the newlyweds go into hiding.
Many of my married friends, and some of my family members, have gone on honeymoons. Some travelled abroad like Capri Italy and the Mexican Riviera. While others stayed closer to home like Key West and Shenandoah Valley. Regardless of their travel plans, they all have shared the following thoughts in planning a honeymoon. First, decide whether you want to simply rest or explore a new city/town on your honeymoon. If you want to rest, then secluded places like a resort on the Mexican Riviera or Shenandoah Valley are ideal. If you want to explore a city/town, then any wonderful European city or a city closer to home could be ideal. If you want to do a little bit of both, then two of my friends, and their husbands, enjoyed their stay in Cancun Mexico and Key West. They were able to relax by the beach on a few of the days, while the rest of the time they were able to either drive around or go on excursions.
Second, after settling on a location you must pick a hotel, or resort, based on your needs and desires. Sites like tripadvisor.com and hotels.com provide consumer reviews and ratings. Do not be obsessive about your research, but be informed. After all, you want to enjoy a relaxing stay without worrying about basic things like quality of service or location of hotel/resort.
Finally, all of my friends agreed on one thing. Do not plan to leave on your honeymoon immediately after the wedding, wait at least a week. Give yourself a little bit of time to recover from the wedding before you go off on a honeymoon. Those of my friends who waited a week or two had much more fun than the few who went a day or two after the wedding.
