I love wearing shalwar kameez but the challenge always has been finding something that is fashionable without being too over the top, with a plethora of kharai and kaam. I am always on the lookout for something that fits my appreciation for American fashion, yet still contains hints of classic eastern chic style. Usually the occasions that necessitate the purchasing of eastern clothes are weddings or some important party, where the dress code requires donning a beautiful Pakistani/Indian outfit. Having no family in Pakistan, over the years I have resorted to three modes of buying clothes:

Internet boutiques: In the last few years the Internet is full of boutiques, some belonging to designers while many other claim to sell designer clothes but are really selling knockoffs. I have ordered clothes from some of the designer website including MariaB., HSY, Karma, and Nayna. The customer service was not bad, I think it just depends on whoever happens to be the contact person. The drawback is that their clothes are undoubtedly expensive and often there is some anxiety about what the outfit will look like in actuality. Other websites are seriously questionable and the quality is inferior for the price. Personally, I would proceed with caution.

Store Front Boutiques: In the last decade or so many metropolitan areas have seen growth in South Asian owned businesses, where entire shopping districts have developed. Whether it is Jackson Heights, Edison, or Devon Street, many areas have actual boutiques that sell a variety of clothes. Due to competition, these shops have clothes that are reasonably priced; however, the clothes are not necessarily unique. Often they have a particular outfit in ten different colors with a slight variation in kaam . If I need something at the last minute, then this option works just fine.

Home boutiques: In the last several years, many women have started to sell clothes from their homes. Some may even take orders and your measurements and have items made to order just for you. If you can find a trustworthy “aunty” who has a reputation for selling good quality clothes, then this is the way to go. I have very specific taste in clothing and this has worked great for me. It allows me to set my price, choose my style(color and fabric), and have garments made to fit my measurements. I made one visit to the auntie’s home so she could take my measurements and now I simply email/phone her with what I want, and my clothes are delivered to my house in about two-three weeks. All items are beautiful and reasonably priced and whatever I do not like, I give them back to the aunty.

So all of the fashion conscience ladies out there, remember this is only for the ladies who have no direct contact to anyone in Pakistan or India. Are there other options for us ladies living outside of South Asia? Those of you who are lucky enough to either visit or have contacts….LUCKY YOU!
