"What are some of the things you do to stay fit? What are some obstacles for women and maintaining their health?"
Two things that desi women are not very good about are visiting their doctors and exercising. Much of it has to do with their busy lives, family, and/or work obligation, none of which leaves them with much time. However, remember if you are healthy, then so is your entire family.
I am not a health professional but I do love all of the desi foods that are not good for you, and have managed to stay pretty healthy and fit. First things first ladies, make sure you regularly see your health care provider and speak to them about your health concerns. Second, start moving! Whether it is a walk down the street or around the park, you have to begin somewhere, and take it one-step at a time. Do a little bit of research and see if there are any gyms in your area that meet your needs, especially since many health facilities now have areas that are set aside just for women. In addition, many “women only” gyms can be found in most communities, which even provide babysitting services for the little ones. I have belonged to one such gym near Baltimore, Maryland for nine years! Finally, moderation is the key to success.
Enjoy the parathas and biryani but little bit at a time and never ever overeat. Incorporate fruits and healthy low-fat low-calorie items into your diet and skip the high-sugar high-fat choices. Making a small change like switching your half-half/whole milk in your morning chai to 2% will make a big change in your health. At the end your health and fitness is the most important factor affecting your ability to take care of your families and yourselves. This is not about being skinny but about being healthy. SO GET UP, GET STARTED, AND TAKE THE FAMILY WITH YOU!
